What this means
Many schools were obviously built in an era when education was very different from the modern day. New federal and state funding creates the opportunity to more closely align schools for the 21st century with the educational needs of families and students.
Although it is difficult to reach firm conclusions about the total impact of built learning environments on student outcomes, there is a growing body of literature that provides evidence of a strong link between school design and student achievement.
New designs should optimize the powerful interplay of teachers’ strong guided instruction and students’ independent inquiry, discovery and creativity.
As well, community involvement in the planning of new facilities is of the utmost importance. This may also mean ensuring that schools become genuine community resources with facilities that could support new adult learning opportunities outside of school hours or venues for school and community programs and events.
